The Wellness Coalition - Avalon East is one of six wellness coalitions in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The coalition consists of community, government and non-government agencies and others with an interest in promoting wellness and improving the health and well being of people in the Avalon East Region.
The Avalon East Region includes the St. John's and Mount Pearl metropolitan areas, Bell Island, Conception Bay South, the Southern Shore to St. Shotts, and Torbay to Portugal Cove.

The Coalition builds on the work of the former Heart Health Coalition - St. John's Region. Membership has broadened to include those with an interest in diverse aspects of wellness.
The Coalition is managed by a Steering Committee. It is responsible for the Coalition's broad vision, action priorities and budget. The Steering Committee includes representatives from Eastern Health and community groups.
The coaliton focuses on eight areas of wellness. These are:
- Healthy Eating
- Physical Activity
- Tobacco Control
- Injury Prevention
- Child and Youth Development
- Health and Literacy
- Healthy Environments
- Mental Health Promotion
To promote wellness in the Avalon East region through community collaboration, awareness, and action.
Awareness: The Coalition creates opportunities to promote awareness and understanding of wellness and its work.
Education: The Coalition shares information, skills, and learning environments that lead to effective health promotion and wellness in our communities.
Empowerment: The Coalition supports and encourages individuals, organizations and communities in their work for wellness through grants and health promotion activities.
Collaboration: The Coalition supports, nurtures and seeks effective partnerships that will further the goals of the Coalition and its members.
Action: The Coalition is committed to change that leads to wellness in our communities.
Funding and Support
The Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, provides funding for the Coalition. Eastern Health provides staff and infrastructure support.
